Simulating higher derivative theories of gravity

Abstract:

In this talk I will discuss some recent progress in modelling self-consistently alternative theories of gravity involving higher derivative corrections. In the first part, I will discuss the modifications of the standard gauges used in numerical relativity, focusing on the most general scalar tensor theory of gravity up to four derivatives as an example. In the second part, I will discuss higher derivative theories of gravity with higher order equations of motion and how to “fix” them extending the Muller-Israel-Stewart formalism of viscous relativistic hydrodynamics to theories of gravity.
