From Fundamentals to the Frontier.
Students’ Program for Immersion in Theoretical Physics.
Theoretical physics thrives on bold thinking.
Our internship program includes external internships for undergraduate (Physics degree) and Master’s students (Master’s in Theoretical Physics), as well as curricular internships for undergraduate students from both UAM and other universities, provided there is an agreement between institutions.
At SPIN, we invite students to take part in that process, not as spectators, but as contributors.

From advanced research to a vibrant intellectual community, SPIN offers a first step into the world of real science.
How SPIN Works
SPIN is the internship program for Bachelor’s and Master’s students who want to grow inside the vibrant environment of the Instituto de FĂsica TeĂłrica (IFT). Here’s your journey — clear, guided, and full of possibility.
-
1
Finding Your Tutor
Maybe you already have someone in mind — fantastic. If not, just tell us the research lines or topics that excite you, and we’ll help you find the right mentor to walk the path with you.
-
2
Paperwork, Simplified
We handle the process so you can focus on learning. From agreements to signatures, we’ll guide you and your tutor through the essentials with clarity and care.
-
3
Do Your Internship
Dive into your project and enjoy the IFT’s unique ecosystem — a place where ideas move fast, curiosity leads, and science is very much alive.
-
4
Your Certificate
When you finish — curricular or extracurricular — you’ll receive an official certificate issued by the IFT to showcase in your CV and portfolio.
-
5
What’s Next?
Ready for the next step? We’ll point you to our Master’s and PhD pathways, so you can keep moving forward on your research journey.
SPIN is part of the UAM’s curricular and extracurricular internship framework.
Undergraduate students in Physics at UAM can participate either through their curricular internships (by enrolling in the corresponding course) or as extracurricular internships. Master’s students may take part via the extracurricular modality.
If the internship is curricular, the grade will appear on the student’s academic transcript. In the case of extracurricular internships, students may request the Faculty to include the internship in the European Diploma Supplement (SET). In both cases, the IFT will issue a certificate of participation in the program.
Students from other universities are also welcome.
Just write to practicas@ift.csic.es and we’ll help you with the process.
Tutoring certificates will also be provided to faculty and researchers who supervise internships within the SPIN framework.
