Origin: About NOVA+
NOVA+ was born from a clear conviction: no one should have to walk the path of Theoretical Physics alone.
It’s a program that supports, inspires, and empowers everyone who wishes to take part in it (from undergraduate studies to the beginning of the PhD) by offering mentorship, professional guidance, and emotional support so that each person can build their own path in science.
Our goal is to create a strong and collaborative network, with a special focus on promoting visibility and leadership among women and underrepresented groups, strengthening key skills, and opening doors to real opportunities: scholarships, conferences, publications, and research projects.
Here, everyone is welcome.
The values guiding every step of NOVA+ are inclusion, diversity, equity, collaboration, empowerment, and commitment.
The gender gap in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is still a reality that limits the talent and opportunities of many people. In theoretical physics, this means that too many young women grow up without nearby role models or safe spaces where they can picture themselves in science.
NOVA+ seeks to be part of that change, creating an inclusive environment where every voice matters, where mentorship provides genuine support, and where community amplifies opportunities for everyone who dreams of doing science.
FAQ´s Students
Who can apply?
The program is aimed at Bachelor’s and Master’s students in Physics. Availability to participate in on-site activities held at the Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Department of Theoretical Physics at UAM will be positively valued.
We recommend that you read all the information about the requirements on Momentum.
How much time does it require?
The program includes 6 sessions per year (about one every two months). Some pairs meet monthly, others every two months, agree it with your mentor. Between sessions, independent preparation and reflection are expected.
What commitment do I make if I join?
- Attend at least 5 sessions.
- Prepare each meeting, emailing your mentor the day before with the topic and a few highlights.
- Complete the short post-session questionnaire and keep your logbook up to date.
- Enjoy the community, collaborate whenever possible, and build bonds of learning and growth.
What do I gain as a student?
- Professional and emotional guidance for your journey.
- Access to information on scholarships, projects, conferences, and opportunities.
- A support network of students, researchers, and alumni.
- An official certificate recognizing your participation, issued by IFT-UAM/CSIC.
What if I can’t attend every session?
We ask for commitment and clarity: if you can’t make it, notify your mentor in advance and reschedule. To remain in the program, you must attend at least 5 sessions. If that’s not possible, you can reapply in future editions. Remember: this is for you, and it also means respecting your mentor’s time.
Does it cost anything?
For students, it’s free. The real “cost” is your dedication and commitment. Mentors contribute their time; please be honest—if you can’t commit, free the spot so another student can benefit.
Can I join with a researcher I already collaborate(d) with?
No. The program must be a new, non-hierarchical space. Prior academic or collaboration relationships between mentor and mentee are not allowed.
Can I get academic help during sessions?
No. Mentoring is not academic tutoring. Sessions focus on professional and personal development, future planning, and transversal skills—not on solving specific academic questions.
FAQ´s Mentors
Do I need prior mentoring experience?
No. What matters most is the willingness to accompany, active listening, and inspiration.
What do I gain as a mentor?
● The chance to make a meaningful impact on the next generation of theoretical physicists.
Growth in leadership, guidance, and communication skills.
Contributing to a more inclusive and diverse scientific community.
What are the sessions like?
They are open-dialogue meetings, defined by each mentor–mentee pair. Topics may include professional guidance, transversal skills, emotional or motivational support.
Do mentors receive a certificate?
Yes. Upon completion, you will receive a mentor certificate of participation issued by the IFT Directorate.
