The Doctoral Programme in Theoretical Physics (PDFT) falls within the field of Experimental Sciences and is one of the most specialised training offerings at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM).
The PDFT is coordinated by the Department of Theoretical Physics (DFT–UAM), and the Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT, UAM–CSIC), a joint UAM–CSIC centre of international standing. Both institutions are leading references in research and doctoral training in Theoretical Physics, with intense activity in national and international projects, interdisciplinary collaborations, and the organisation of specialised schools and seminars.
Research Areas
Standard Model Phenomenology and Beyond, Astroparticle Physics and Gravitation
String Theory and Supergravity
Nuclear Structure, Lattice Field Theories and Condensed Matter
Experimental High-Energy Physics
Partner Institutions
Every step matters
Do research in an international ecosystem and become the voice that pushes the frontiers of Physics.
Scientific areas: The heart of the PDFT
Theoretical Physics is conceived in a broad sense, encompassing disciplines related to the understanding of nature at its most fundamental level. These areas form the basis of the active lines of research developed by professors and researchers in the programme.

PhD Statistics
The current programme derives from the former Official Doctoral Programme in Theoretical Physics, which obtained positive accreditation in 2010 (BOE, 10 February 2010). It was awarded the Quality Mention from its first academic year (2003–2004; refs. MCD2003-00221 and MCD2006-00374) and later received the “Towards Excellence” Mention from the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia del Gobierno de España (BOE, 20 October 2011; ref. MEE2011-0264) with an overall weighted score of 95/100.
The programme now in force is an adaptation of the previous one to the provisions of Royal Decree 99/2011 and is integrated into the Doctoral School of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (EDUAM).
