I will describe several geometric aspects of different gauge theories on Riemann surfaces that originate in four-dimensional Yang\u2013Mills theories. A common theme is the appearance of various types of Higgs fields. I will provide some basic mathematical and historical background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
