Rebecca Collins, Ram\u00f3n and Cajal investigator was invited to ‘La Longitud de Onda’ a Spanish National Radio Program to share her research on ‘Listening to Dark Matter ‘. The program shared extracts of the sound art pieces that formed part of the exhibition held last year at the gallery space in the Autonomous University of Madrid. Rebecca is currently exploring potential future venues for the exhibition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This talk and practice-research presentation will share details of sonic scientific infrastructure used to detect dark matter. As an undetected missing mass in the universe, physicists search for this elusive particle in the cosmic silence cultivated beneath Pyrenean Mountains and with hydrophones deep below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea; from ancient Roman-era lead uncovered at shipwrecks on the bottom of the ocean to the Colorado mines where radio pure Argon-40, dubbed \u201cthe boring guy\u201d by a lab technician, is extracted. Alarmingly, in the case of dark matter detection, we are running short of materials pure enough to use, largely due to pollution from the Industrial Revolution and other atmospheric impurities in circulation. Throughout this session, Rebecca Collins will elaborate on the lengthy logistical processes involved in the detection of dark matter, considered in light of a much-needed return to discourse on the planetary. <\/span><\/p>

Rebecca Collins was invited to share her research practice at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh.<\/span><\/p>

For my exhibition \u2018Listening to Dark Matter\u2019 I encouraged gallery-goers to lend an ear to uncertainty, to engage in the experiential, and to witness the slow arrival of the elusive. The four sound works featured in the exhibition were developed as part of my Royal Society of Edinburgh-funded research project \u2018Parameters for Understanding Uncertainty\u2019 (P4UU). For the year-long investigation I occupied office B14 on the ground floor of the Institute for Theoretical Physics. From here I set up an interdisciplinary seminar series titled \u2018Unlikely Interlocutors\u2019. I also undertook two field visits to laboratories where sound, or cosmic silence, is being used to detect dark matter, an invisible yet abundant particle present in our everyday lives. David Cerde\u00f1o and I had the pleasure of speaking on Spanish National Radio at the invitation of Jos\u00e9 Luis Carles and Cristina Palomese for La Casa del Sonido their weekly radio program. This was a generous opportunity to dialogue with two experts in sound art and soundscapes. From the conversation that unfolded it was clear there were a number of uncertainties to be shared and, whilst perhaps this led to more questions rather than answers, the chance to share the project in this format was enriching for both David and I. Extracts from the two sound pieces that feature in the exhibition were played. The fourth (and final) session in the series considers what occurs at the limits of knowledge when the unknown traces of something<\/i> emerge <\/i>indicating the presence of that which is more than nothing<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Commonplace within art\/science collaborations is the use of representation to communicate scientific findings. Such endeavours offer limited returns to artistic research and tend to occur at the tail end of a scientific enquiry. What happens in the predetermined stages of a research investigation, at the point prior to identification or classification, when what is to-be-known is still emerging? If findings cannot be aligned with current systems and structures, what tools do we have for jumping into the unknown?<\/span><\/p>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
This session will operate as a springboard for a dynamic conversation exploring the fundamental characteristics of experimental research.\u00a0 Each speaker will offer access points, insights, and observations into areas of thought that uphold the complexities at stake when considering the nuances of research processes at the nexus of art and science.<\/span><\/p>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Alberto Casas <\/span><\/b>holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics and is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Institute of Theoretical Physics (CSIC-UAM) in Madrid. His research areas are elementary particle physics and cosmology.<\/span><\/p>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
Michael Schwab <\/span><\/b>is an artist, and artist researcher who interrogates post-conceptual uses of technology in a variety of media including photography, drawing, printmaking and installation art. He holds a PhD in photography from the Royal College of Art. He is co-initiator and inaugural Editor-in-Chief of JAR, the Journal for Artistic Research.<\/span><\/p>

In October 2022, Rebecca Collins was invited by Brandon Labelle to share her research project ‘Parametres for Understanding Uncertainty’ in the context of ‘The Listening Academy’ in Bergen, Norway. <\/h6>\n
In what ways can listening be mobilized as a form of critical intervention, one that can impact onto scenes of personal and political struggle? How is listening utilized or figured within experiences of trauma, supporting acts of domination as well as healing and recuperation?<\/h6>\n
What forms of knowledge emerge from sonic practices and projects, where listening is taken on as an experimental, relational position? And are there new opportunities for supporting listening as what can aid in reworking current attention economies? Following these lines of questioning, The Listening Academy aims at fostering transdisciplinary discussions on the topic of listening which can contribute to understandings and acts of recognition and repair. This includes nurturing new imaginaries and knowledges around what it means to hear and be heard, to voice and respond, within today\u2019s planetary environment. <\/h6>\n
This edition of the Academy brings together an international group of scholars, researchers and practitioners whose creative and critical expertise are supportive for diversifying what an art or science of listening may be.
