Art and Science: Artistic Investigation and Sound Art \/\/ Investigaci\u00f3n Art\u00edstica y Arte Sonoro<\/span><\/h3>

Contemporary Art Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT UAM-CSIC) Guest Lecturer Rebecca Collins moved us with her talk ‘Art and Science: Artistic Research and Sound Art’, making us reflect on the role of the humanities in physics.<\/span><\/p>

Listening to Dark Matter \/\/ Escuchando la materia oscura<\/span><\/h3>

Our Universe contains vast amounts of a new form of matter that neither emits nor absorbs light. We do not know the nature of this mysterious \u00abdark matter\u00bb, despite having been postulated more than a hundred years ago. Its search in different types of experiments has meant a revolution in particle physics, since it shows the limitations of the Standard Model. Likewise, this enigma still unresolved also gives rise to other ways of thinking that come from artistic practices. In this talk we will juxtapose two perspectives that rarely touch, such as theoretical physics and artistic research, motivated by the (perhaps impossible?) question of how we can listen to these elusive particles.<\/span><\/p>

When Artistic Research meets Scientific Research: Strategies for Scientific Outreach<\/span><\/h3>

\u00a0<\/p>

Rebecca Collins and David Cerde\u00f1o give insights into the research project ‘Parametres for Understanding Uncertainty (P4UU)’ for PhD and post-doc students in attendance at the XXXIII Canary Islands Winter School for Astroparticle Physics. The talk considers nuances between artistic research and scientific outreach using examples from the commissioned sound works produced for P4UU and the workshop ‘Collective Practices of Uncertainty’ curated and led by Collins.<\/span><\/p>
