However, understanding its non-perturbative aspects &#8211; especially relevant for the study of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interaction within the Standard Model &#8211; remains one of the great contemporary theoretical challenges. Lattice field theory offers a formulation based on first principles that allows to describe physical phenomena in the strong coupling regime, where perturbative methods are no longer valid.
