One of the key goals of Particle Physics is to provide a deep understanding of the fundamental forces of Nature. In this context, achieving compatibility between quantum mechanics and Einstein’s theory of gravity is one of the main challenges of theoretical physics in this century. String theory is the leading candidate for a consistent theory of quantum gravity and, at the same time, has a structure rich enough to contain the essential ingredients of the Standard Model. String theory also makes it possible to understand the microscopic degrees of freedom of black holes and offers a broad range of connections with field theory (through holography and the AdS–CFT correspondence), as well as with other strongly coupled systems in condensed matter physics and heavy-ion physics.
