The Sustainability Challenge Behind Artificial Intelligence\u201d<\/em>\n      en el <strong>Auditorio del CFTMAT<\/strong>.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      La charla analizar\u00e1 el doble papel de la inteligencia artificial en el \u00e1mbito\n      de la sostenibilidad: por un lado, como una poderosa herramienta para afrontar\n      retos ambientales y sociales y, por otro, como una tecnolog\u00eda cuyo r\u00e1pido\n      crecimiento plantea importantes desaf\u00edos en t\u00e9rminos de consumo energ\u00e9tico,\n      infraestructuras y uso de recursos.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Tambi\u00e9n se abordar\u00e1n las posibles estrategias para reducir la huella ambiental\n      de los sistemas de inteligencia artificial y el papel que pueden desempe\u00f1ar\n      la investigaci\u00f3n, la industria y las pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas en el desarrollo de\n      una IA verdaderamente sostenible.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      Tras el coloquio tendr\u00e1 lugar el tradicional <em>coffee<\/em>, que ofrecer\u00e1\n      la oportunidad de continuar el intercambio cient\u00edfico de manera informal.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <h3 style=\"color:#004a87; font-size:1.3rem; margin-top:24px; margin-bottom:10px;\">\n      Abstract\n    <\/h3>\n\n    <p>\n      Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being presented as a powerful enabler of sustainability. From climate change mitigation and renewable energy integration to environmental monitoring, waste management, water conservation, disaster response, and pollution control, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to support more sustainable and resilient societies. However, the rapid expansion of AI also raises critical questions. What are the environmental implications of having virtually unlimited computational power at our disposal? What is the real impact of AI on energy production and consumption? Can the benefits of AI outweigh the growing demand for data centers, computing infrastructure, and digital resources? And what technological and organizational foundations are needed to ensure that AI itself remains sustainable?\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      This talk will explore the dual role of AI as both a tool for sustainability, and a source of environmental and societal challenges. It will examine the energy, infrastructure, and resource requirements behind modern AI systems, discuss emerging approaches for reducing their environmental footprint, and reflect on how research, industry, and policy can contribute to the development of truly sustainable AI.\n    <\/p>\n\n  <\/div>\n\n  <!-- English -->\n  <div id=\"content-en-paolo-dini\" style=\"display:none;\">\n\n    <h2 style=\"color:#004a87; font-size:1.8rem; margin-bottom:16px;\">\n      DIFT Colloquium: Paolo Dini\n    <\/h2>\n\n    <p>\n      On <strong>Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.<\/strong>, the\n      <em>DIFT Colloquium<\/em> series will host\n      <strong>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cttc.cat\/people\/paolo-dini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" style=\"color:#004a87; text-decoration:none;\">\n          Paolo Dini\n        <\/a>\n      <\/strong>, researcher at the\n      <strong>Centre Tecnol\u00f2gic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC)<\/strong>\n      and coordinator of the\n      <em>Sustainable Artificial Intelligence (SAI)<\/em> research unit.\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      He will deliver a talk entitled\n      <em>\u201cCan AI Save or Destroy the Planet?
