DIFT Colloquium: Benjamin Grinstein
El próximo 13 de mayo, el ciclo DIFT Colloquium contará con la participación de Benjamin Grinstein, quien impartirá el coloquio titulado “Buckets versus pipes: the neutron lifetime puzzle” en el Salón de Actos del CFTMAT.
El Dr. Grinstein es actualmente presidente del Departamento de Física y Profesor Distinguido en la Universidad de California, San Diego, y está ampliamente reconocido por sus contribuciones pioneras al desarrollo de teorías efectivas y por su impacto en la física de partículas y la cosmología moderna.
Su visita representa una excelente oportunidad para escuchar a uno de los referentes internacionales del campo y compartir con él un momento de intercambio científico durante el tradicional coffee posterior al coloquio.
Abstract
A precise knowledge of the neutron lifetime is important because it serves as a fundamental input for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) models, which predict the primordial abundances of light elements. It also enters in the determination of the Cabbibbo mixing angle, crucial in testing the validity of the CKM theory of quark flavor, in understanding reactor neutrino detection rates and the behavior of matter in extreme environments like neutron stars. Precise experiments give very precise results, but the values determined differ by over 1% with high statistical significance depending on the technology used for the experiment. In this talk I will review this so-called “neutron lifetime puzzle” and some of the proposed solutions.
